Baking is Brilliant for Toddler Development

This week is National Baking Week in the UK. Here are a couple of reasons that baking is brilliant for toddler development:

Baking Teaches Skills:

There are so many skills that children can learn through baking, from the physical skills of pouring, stirring and rolling, to more cognitive skills like planning, following instructions and sequencing steps. Granted, for younger toddlers, the more cognitive skills may well be over looked but they will still have great fun developing their physical skills.

Toddler Baking

It’s a Multisensory Activity:

Baking ticks all of the boxes on being a multisensory activity. All of the senses are stimulated and that makes baking an effective teaching tool as children often learn best in a multisensory environment. So, you can start counting the number of biscuits made, talk about the shapes and colours of the cookie cutters, teaching basic concepts to your little one.

Patience is a Virtue:

And one that not many toddlers have. Don’t be surprised if your little one tucks into the cookie dough before its anywhere near ready. Baking is a wonderful tool to use to teach children that patience really is a virtue and that that if they wait until the cookies are ready, they will taste much better.

Here are some tips to make the process a little easier for both of you:

  • Make sure you have a simple recipe with few steps if your toddler is still quite young.
  • Measure all of the ingredients into smaller bowls before hand (unless you want mess everywhere!) If your child is older, letting her help with measuring is a great maths activity.
  • Make sure your recipe is edible when raw as it will more than likely be taste-tested before it is actually cooked. (Try avoid recipes with eggs).
  • If you have some time (which is unlikely) try and find picture step-by-step instructions or take plenty of photos as you’re baking for next time. These pictures can be used next time to teach sequencing and your toddler can try to follow the recipe even if she can’t read yet.
  • Try for something fairly healthy and low in sugar so that your toddler can enjoy a some of his own baking without bouncing off the walls later.

Do you have any quick and easy recipes that you make with your toddler? I’d love to hear about them and expand our own little recipe collection! Leave me a comment and tell me about it!

Happy baking!

The Birth of an iPad App for Baby Development

NigglyNoo (and by that I mean me) has recently developed an iPad app focusing on the first year of baby development. It’s been so exciting to see the app go from a concept to being a real product that is available for sale. It has also been something of a labour of love.

Without sounding like a sales pitch, I want to tell you why I think the Baby Development Activities App is a must have for all first time parents. Do you remember what it was like with your newborn? The seemingly endless feeds, changes and sleepless nights? The uncertainty of why baby is crying and what you should do? The number of times you took baby to the doctor because you weren’t sure whether something was normal or not?

Once the fog clears and you can start forming coherent, logical thoughts again, you begin to wonder what you should be doing to entertain your baby. Are you stimulating them enough or too much? Is baby getting enough tummy time? Surely she’s bored being at home all day? What milestones should he be meeting and when? So, you begin to trawl the web, looking for answers (in all your spare time

I am so passionate about baby development and helping parents give their children the best possible developmental start. This app is something of an expression of that passion.
of course!)

Well, with this app, all of the information is in one place. You can find month-by-month developmental milestones and each milestone has easy activities that you can do with your baby to help them reach those milestones. So, instead of all of those hours of research, you can have a glass of wine, put your feet up and relax, knowing all of the info that you need is in one place, on your handy iPad.

In this day and age of information and technology, where pushing prizes are often iPads instead of rings, more and more baby-focussed apps are being released. I have used apps for labour, breastfeeding and taking handy span shots of memorable moments.

Which app have you used in parenting your little one?

Here is the app in action, if you’re interested:

Confessions of a Frazzled Mom – I need your help

This post veers a little bit away from my regular posts but I thought I might share my confessions and get some ideas from fellow moms (and dads)!

This morning started well with my morning wake up call (my daughter) calling “Mommy” in her little sing-song voice at 8 this morning. Not bad – I had a lie in! Things soon took a turn for the worse after breakfast though.

Once my daughter had jumped on my husband and wrestled him from sleep, he asked what all the little rubbery balls in our bed were. Ummmm… Not sure. Oh look, Gracie’s nappy has split open, leaving a trail of rubbery wee-filled balls in it’s wake.

Activities to do with your Newborn Baby

A good friend of ours recently gave birth to a beautiful little girl. This got us chatting about some activities that she could do with her daughter, not necessarily to stimulate her development or make her a genius, but just things that they could quietly do that would be helpful in the long run. Having had some time to think about it, here are some thoughts on activities that you can do with your newborn baby.

The thing is, your little newborn is adjusting to life on the outside and their little brain is assimilating and processing all of the new things it’s seeing, feeling, hearing, smelling and tasting.

Life can be pretty overwhelming and exhausting for you your newborn baby
Life can be pretty overwhelming and exhausting for you your baby. So, the first thing is to make sure that you only do these activities when your baby is calm and awake. As soon as you notice that he is starting to get a bit fussy, stop doing whatever it is you are doing and take him to a calm place and cuddle him so that he doesn’t become too overstimulated.

Fun Developmental Bath Time Activities for your Baby and Toddler

Bath time is one of the highlights of our day (and not just because bedtime is just around the corner!) Right from day one, Gracie loved bath time and it seems to get a little longer every evening.  There are some great bath time games that you can play with your baby and toddler to aid their development.

Massage

As you’re washing your baby, you can use it as an opportunity to do some baby massage. We should never underestimate the importance of touch in our baby’s lives. It is vital for bonding, stimulates brain development, is very calming and can therefore help with better sleep patterns.
